Un patrimonio archivistico importante che deve essere conosciuto, divulgato e valorizzato. In the modern age, the history of the European city was heavily influenced by the construction of fortifications. Nowadays European military, state and municipal archives are the custodians of the many drawings that are evidence of the ways in which the necessities of war shaped the city. This has become an important archival heritage that today ought to be rediscovered, promoted and re-evaluated. For years, city plans were often kept secret because they were strategic documents for state security. Over the centuries, when the urgencies of war were halted, they were dispersed among various archives. Until the beginning of the 18th century, a number of cities were under Spanish rule (they are now present-day Piedmont). The plans for these cities are conserved in ISCAG in Rome, the state and municipal archives of Piedmont and Lombardy, the National Library of Florence, the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid, the Archivo General de Simancas, the Bibliothéque Nationale de France in Paris, the archives of the Historical Service of the Défense at Vincennes, the Bayerische Staatsbibliotek in Munich, and the Krigsarkivet in Stockholm.
