RESUMENEste ensayo tiene como propósito describir los aspectos generales y principios en los que se fundamenta la Nueva Economía Institucional (NEI) según North (2001 [1990]) quien al relajar algunos de los supuestos claves de la teoría económica neoclásica abre paso a la construcción de su teoría de las instituciones, la cual sostiene que es el determinante fundamental en la explicación del desempeño económico a largo plazo de las naciones a lo largo de la historia. Se concluye que, sobre la base de la literatura empírica disponible, las instituciones es el factor, aparentemente, que más explica, en términos generales, el desempeño económico de los países en el largo plazo.Palabras clave: Nueva Economía Institucional, Instituciones, Crecimiento Económico, Desarrollo económico. ABSTRACTThis essay aims to describe the general aspects and principles on which the New Institutional Economics (NIE) is based according to North (2001 [1990]), who, by relaxing some of the key assumptions of the neoclassical economics theory, opens the way to building his theory of institutions, which he argues is the fundamental determinant in explaining the long-term economic performance of nations throughout history. The research is documentary and descriptive and was carried out on the basis of one of the fundamental works of this author entitled "Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Development", with special emphasis on the assumptions that underpin this theory and on the conceptual elements that define and characterize institutions.
