El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar a Maicao como un caso de metrópolis transfronteriza en la frontera colombo-venezolana. Fundada en la década de 1920, su historia está marcada por los flujos comerciales entre ambos países que le ha permitido que –a diferencia del sistema urbano binacional surgido entre Cúcuta y San Antonio del Táchira- la ciudad guajira se cons-tituya en una metrópolis transfronteriza con influencia económica sobre una red de ciudades tanto de la Región Caribe de Colombia como la Región Zuliana en Venezuela que incluso la superan en términos económicos y demográficos. El análisis se realizó utilizan-do un método no obstructivo de revisión documental y análisis de estadísticas previas. Se concluye que la influencia económica so-bre la red urbana se debe al desarrollo de dinámicas económicas transfronterizas que abarcan desde la economía formal hasta la eco-nomía en la sombra, pasando incluso por la economía criminal. Cualquier iniciativa o decisión económica en la zona ha de conside-rar esta primacía económica. Abstrac. The present work aims to analyze Maicao as a case of a cross-border metropolis on the Colombian-Venezuelan border. Founded in the 1920s, its history is marked by the commercial flows between the two countries that have allowed it - unlike the binatio-nal urban system that emerged between Cúcuta and San Antonio del Táchira - the city of Guajira to become a cross-border metropo-lis with influence economic over a network of cities in both the Caribbean Region of Colombia and the Zuliana Region in Venezuela that even surpass it in economic and demographic terms. The analysis was carried out using a non-obstructive method of documen-tary review and analysis of previous statistics. It is concluded that the economic influence on the urban network is due to the develo-pment of cross-border economic dynamics that range from the formal economy to the shadow economy, including the criminal eco-nomy.
