Este artículo busca definir y explicar la memoria autobiográfica desde un punto de vista funcional. Para esto, se analizan definiciones desde perspectivas cognitivas y socioculturales, resaltando su convergencia con relación a los componentes asumidos como constituyentes de la memoria autobiográfica y sus funciones atribuidas. La revisión de un modelo teórico sobre su funcionamiento permite comprender cómo los sistemas de memoria que la constituyen interactúan con procesos de control y esquemas culturales para generar recuerdos autobiográficos, esenciales para mantener una imagen coherente del individuo y un registro moderadamente exacto de las experiencias. Para esto, se analizan definiciones desde perspectivas cognitivas y socioculturales, resaltando su convergencia con relación a los componentes asumidos como constituyentes de la memoria autobiográfica y sus funciones atribuidas. La revisión de un modelo teórico sobre su funcionamiento permite comprender cómo los sistemas de memoria que la constituyen interactúan con procesos de control y esquemas culturales para generar recuerdos autobiográficos, esenciales para mantener una imagen coherente del individuo y un registro moderadamente exacto de las experiencias. For this, definitions are analyzed from cognitive and sociocultural perspectives highlighting how they converge in relation to components assumed as constituent of autobiographical memory and tasks attributed to it. A theoretical model about its functioning is reviewed and allows us to understand how the memory systems that constitute it interacting with process control and cultural patterns to generate autobiographical memories essential to maintain a consistent image of the individual and a moderately accurate record of the experiences. Its functions are described: self-definition, social interaction and self-regulation.
