En este artículo se plantea la necesidad de comprender al protestantismo desde la perspectiva de piedad ya que de ella emana su pensamiento, su ética y su comprensión de lo social. Al analizar la relación del pensamiento teológico con respecto a las derivaciones contextuales, se señala que el “principio protestante” surgido de la Reforma del siglo XVI comprendido en el marco de la “larga Edad Media”, significó una forma de protesta que cuestionó de manera incisiva la cristiandad europea ya que la Iglesia católica fue desafiada como institución dominante y estructuradora de los hábitos y las costumbres de la sociedad. Protestantismo, piedad y ética Protestantism, Piety and Ethics En este artículo se plantea la necesidad de comprender al protestantismo desde la perspectiva de piedad ya que de ella emana su pensamiento, su ética y su comprensión de lo social. Al analizar la relación del pensamiento teológico con respecto a las derivaciones contextuales, se señala que el “principio protestante” surgido de la Reforma del siglo XVI comprendido en el marco de la “larga Edad Media”, significó una forma de protesta que cuestionó de manera incisiva la cristiandad europea ya que la Iglesia católica fue desafiada como institución dominante y estructuradora de los hábitos y las costumbres de la sociedad. Sin embargo, si bien la Reforma protestante contenía elementos innegablemente disfuncionales con relación al medioevo, fue una renovación del espíritu medieval y hubo que esperar a la aparición del movimiento puritano, con su comprensión de la predestinación y el orden divino, para que apareciera con toda su fuerza una ética protestante capaz de contribuir al surgimiento del capitalismo y el mundo moderno. In this article, it is considered the need to understand protestantism in terms of piety, since this is from which derives its ideology, its ethics, and its comprehension of society. When analizing the relation of the theological thought regarding contextual derivations, it is shown that the “protestant principle” that emerged from the Reformation in the XVI Century in the period known as “the Long Middle Ages,” it meant a form of protest that questioned, in an incisive way, the European christianity, since the Catholic church was challenged as a dominant institution and structurer of society’s habits and customs. However, even if the protestant reformation contained elements undeniably disfunctional in relation to medieval times, it was a renewal of the medieval spirit. It was necessary to look forward to the appearance of the Puritan movement with its comprehension of predestination and the divine order; so that a protestant ethics could appear with all of its strength, being capable of contributing to the emergence of capitalism and modern world. In this article, it is considered the need to understand protestantism in terms of piety, since this is from which derives its ideology, its ethics, and its comprehension of society.
