El debate teológico contemporáneo al interior del catolicismo llama a recuperar una concepción cualitativa de catolicidad con el objetivo de corregir el clásico énfasis en su extensión geográfica. Las tendencias a identificar catolicidad con universalidad, o a confundir universalidad con uniformidad y a igualar continuidad con inmutabilidad, impiden que la Iglesia pueda desplegar una comprensión más holística de catolicidad. Enfrentando los desafíos de la globalización, el cristianismo puede ofrecer un camino alternativo de unidad en diversidad lo cual parece ser una traducción actual de la categoría teológica tradicional de catolicidad de la Iglesia. The tendenciesto identify catholicity with universality, to confuse universality withuniformity and to equate continuity with immutability, prevented theChurch from developing a holistic approach to catholicity. In facingthe challenge of globalization, Christianity can offer an alternativeway of togetherness in diversity, which seems to be the current translation of the theological category of the catholicity of the Church. This article’s focus will be therefore on the role and significance of community building and the Church’s unity in regard to sustaining creation and addressing globalization.
