Entre los estudios tradicionales sobre la noción de trabajo enlos Padres de la Iglesia, de talante apologético, y los análisis delmundo del trabajo en el Imperio existe una notable diferencia. Losprimeros afirman que el cristianismo trajo una concepción positivadel trabajo, y los segundos, minimizan la influencia del cristianismoen el modo en que los antiguos valoraban el trabajo. Una lecturaatenta de los textos más significativos muestra que las influenciasfueron mutuas y que, al modificarse con el paso del tiempo lascondiciones sociales, se produjo una evolución de las posicionesadoptadas por unos y otros.

There is a notable difference between the traditional studies on the notion of work in the Fathers of the Church, of an apologetic spirit, and the analyzes of the world of work in the Ancient Roman Empire. The former affirm that Christianity brought a positive conception of work and the latter minimize the influence of Christianity on the way in which the ancients valued work. A careful reading of the most significant texts shows that the influences were mutual and that with the passage of time the social conditions were modified, which caused an evolution of the positions adopted by each other.
