Esta investigación busca caracterizar el desarrollo motor y la cultura somática wayuu considerando el cuerpo como hecho bio-psico-social. En este sentido, ha sido necesario establecer también de qué manera los wayuu estimulan el desarrollo motor de los niños con el fin de prepararlos para la ejecución de labores que garanticen la subsistencia (pesca, cacería, pastoreo, agricultura, elaboración de artesanías), el ocio y la recreación (juegos autóctonos y apropiados), la reproducción de la cultura (danza) y el fortalecimiento de la identidad. En este sentido, ha sido necesario establecer también de qué manera los wayuu estimulan el desarrollo motor de los niños con el fin de prepararlos para la ejecución de labores que garanticen la subsistencia (pesca, cacería, pastoreo, agricultura, elaboración de artesanías), el ocio y la recreación (juegos autóctonos y apropiados), la reproducción de la cultura (danza) y el fortalecimiento de la identidad. Se presenta el contexto geográfico y cultural de los indígenas wayuu que habitan en el departamento de La Guajira - Colombia. Los referentes teóricos están fundamentados en los planteamientos de la antropología del cuerpo, los conceptos de cultura somática, etnomotricidad, desarrollo motor y expresiones motrices. La metodología está basada en el enfoque cualitativo, el método etnográfico y la aplicación de técnicas como la entrevista y la observación participante. Los resultados presentan las diferentes etapas de desarrollo definidas por los wayuu y la caracterización del desarrollo motriz en cada una de ellas. Así mismo, se señala la importancia de algunas actividades cotidiana para el desarrollo de habilidades específicas. La cultura somática y el desarrollo motor de los wayuu deben abordarse desde una perspectiva holística y su fomento no solo debe contemplar la dimensión física del individuo sino también lo cognitivo y cultural. Palabras Clave: Etnomotricidad This research seeks to characterize the motor development and somatic Wayuu culture considering the body as a bio-psycho-social fact. In this sense, it has also been necessary to establish how the Wayuu stimulate the motor development of children in order to prepare them for the execution of tasks that guarantee subsistence (fishing, hunting, herding, agriculture, making handicrafts), leisure and recreation (indigenous and appropriate games), the reproduction of culture (dance) and the strengthening of identity. The geographical and cultural context of the Wayuu indigenous people who live in the department of La Guajira - Colombia is presented. The theoretical references are based on the approaches of the anthropology of the body, the concepts of somatic culture, ethnomotricity, motor development and motor expressions. The methodology is based on the qualitative approach, the ethnographic method and the application of techniques such as the interview and participant observation. The results present the different stages of development defined by the Wayuu and the characterization of motor development in each one of them. Likewise, the importance of some daily activities for the development of specific skills is pointed out. Somatic culture and motor development of the Wayuu must be approached from a holistic perspective and their promotion must not only contemplate the physical dimension of the individual but also the cognitive and cultural dimension.
