Este escrito establece las relaciones existentes entre crecimiento económico y desarrollo turístico en cinco países latinoamericanos: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, México y Perú. Tourism and economic growth through panel data cointegration for Latin American countries
Este escrito establece las relaciones existentes entre crecimiento económico y desarrollo turístico en cinco países latinoamericanos: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, México y Perú. El objetivo es obtener evidencia empírica que permita establecer la relación entre tales conceptos en los países de la muestra por medio de un modelo multivariado que emplea los ingresos reales por turismo per cápita, el número de llegadas de turistas internacionales per cápita, el tipo de cambio real efectivo —es decir, una variable proxy de la competitividad externa— y el PIB real per cápita mediante el empleo de la técnica de cointegración de datos panel heterogéneos. Por tal razón, se decidió realizar pruebas de cointegración y técnicas econométricas empleando mínimos cuadrados ordinarios totalmente modificados, por medio del uso de datos panel, utilizando para el escrito datos anuales del periodo 2000-2019. Como principales resultados se establece evidencia sólida de relaciones de cointegración de paneles entre desarrollo turístico y PIB para el caso de los cinco países latinoamericanos considerados en el estudio, así como la existencia de la relación entre ingresos por turismo y PIB de los países analizados.
This paper establishes the relationships between economic growth and tourism development in five Latin American countries: Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. The objective is to obtain empirical evidence that allows establishing the relationship between economic growth and tourism development through a multivariate model that uses real income from tourism per capita, the number of international tourist arrivals per capita, the real effective exchange rate (that is, a proxy variable for external competitiveness) and real GDP per capita using the cointegration technique of heterogeneous panel data. In this way, it was decided to carry out cointegration tests and econometric techniques using fully modified ordinary least squares, through the use of panel data, using annual data between the periods 2000-2019 for the writing. As main results, solid evidence is established in panel cointegration relationships between tourism development and GDP for the case of the 5 Latin American countries considered in the study, in the same way the existence of the relationship between tourism income and GDP of the countries analyzed.
