This article examines the historical relationship between copyright and legal deposit in the United Kingdom. The introduction shows the origins of legal deposit in England as a voluntary agreement between the Stationer’s Company and Thomas Bodley. Then, I analyse the long legislative union (1709-2003) of copyright and legal deposit in the United Kingdom, with special emphasis on the “battle of the books” (1805-1836); a political, legislative and judicial debate between publishers and the copyright libraries. The Legal Deposit Act of 2003 extended the scope of this heritage measure to digital content including web material. Finally, the conclusions highlight the important role of State intervention to design cultural policies that take into account the public interest related to cultural heritage and the economic concerns of copyright holders.
