Yemen es un país que cuenta con una rica historia y cultura ancestral, siendo uno de los más interesantes casos de estudio en la región del Medio Oriente. A pesar de ello, no se conoce mucho de él e, infortunadamente, hoy es la nación más pobre de la península arábiga. Hacia la década del 2000 el país ya afrontaba una crisis económica y política, que se vio reforzada por las revueltas en 2011 que dieron paso a la salida del expresidente ‘Alī ‘Abdullaḥ Ṣāliḥ, y al intento fallido de la conferencia para el “Diálogo Nacional”. Lejos de encontrarse una solución, las divisiones al interior del país se hicieron más notorias. A pesar de ello, no se conoce mucho de él e, infortunadamente, hoy es la nación más pobre de la península arábiga. Hacia la década del 2000 el país ya afrontaba una crisis económica y política, que se vio reforzada por las revueltas en 2011 que dieron paso a la salida del expresidente ‘Alī ‘Abdullaḥ Ṣāliḥ, y al intento fallido de la conferencia para el “Diálogo Nacional”. Lejos de encontrarse una solución, las divisiones al interior del país se hicieron más notorias. Hoy Yemen se ha sumido en una guerra cruel a partir del levantamiento Ḥūṯi en 2014 y la intervención militar de la coalición liderada por Arabia Saudita, que lejos de constituir una “guerra proxy” entre Teherán y Riyāḍ, involucra diferentes alianzas y actores que han desestabilizado el país por completo y agudizado la situación humanitaria, creando un escenario peor que el de Siria e Irak, ignorado por el mundo. El presente texto representa el reto de incluir el estudio de Yemen en la academia, uno de los países menos comprendidos y estudiados dentro de las grandes problemáticas que vive el Medio Oriente. Yemen is a country that has a rich history and ancestral culture, being one of the most interesting case studies in the Middle East region. Despite this, not much is known about it and unfortunately today it’s the poorest nation in the Arabian peninsula. Towards the decade of the 2000, the country already faced an economic and political crisis, that was reinforced by the revolts in 2011 that led to the exit of the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and the failed attempt of the conference for the “National Dialogue”. Far from finding a solution, the divisions within the country became more visible. Today Yemen has descended into a cruel war since the Houthi uprising in 2014 and the military intervention of the Saudi-led coalition, which far from being a “proxy war” between Tehran and Riyadh, involves different alliances and actors, which has destabilized the country completely and deepened the humanitarian situation, creating a scenario worse than that of Syria and Iraq, ignored by the world. The present text represents the challenge of including the study of Yemen in the academy, one of the countries least understood and least studied within the great problems that the Middle East faces.
