No cabe duda que los cementerios son un reflejo exacto de una ciudad, allí reposan todas las historias y sucesos ocurridos en un territorio, representados en los restos que yacen y los monumentos fúnebres erigidos para preservar la memoria de los actos realizados por personajes relevantes –y no tan relevantes- durante el desarrollo y crecimiento de una ciudad, por lo tanto se convierten en una fuente confiable de información acerca de una metrópoli, ya que es allí donde permanece su historia autentica, sin adornos y sin omisiones. Como no podía ser de otra forma, los cementerios de Medellín cuentan su historia y representan su cultura, no solo en la arquitectura sepulcral, sino también en la ubicación y el momento que fueron levantadas estas necrópolis. Así pues, este artículo comprende una revisión sobre el concepto de la muerte para los seres humanos, pero, en particular, para los habitantes de Antioquia y Medellín. Se hace una revisión histórica de los cementerios para entender las representaciones de los habitantes de Medellín, sus costumbres y prácticas, contando y analizando la historia de estos camposantos, para finalmente comprender de qué manera estos lugares cuentan la historia de la ciudad y reflejan sus dinámicas en las distintas épocas. There is no doubt that cemeteries are an accurate reflection of a city, there lie all the stories and events that occurred in a territory, represented in the remains that lie and funeral monuments erected to preserve the memory of the acts performed by relevant characters -and not so relevant- during the development and growth of a city, therefore they become a reliable source of information about a metropolis, as it is where its authentic history remains, without ornaments and without omissions. As it could not be otherwise, the cemeteries of Medellin tell its history and represent its culture, not only in the sepulchral architecture, but also in the location and the time these necropolises were erected. Thus, this article includes a review of the concept of death for human beings, but, in particular, for the inhabitants of Antioquia and Medellín. A historical review of the cemeteries is made to understand the representations of the inhabitants of Medellin, their customs and practices, telling and analyzing the history of these cemeteries, to finally understand how these places tell the story of the city and reflect its dynamics in different times.
