Methods of measuring aerobic capacity and muscle strength in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in an in-hospital setting
Antecedentes: La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) es la deficiencia respiratoria de mayor prevalencia e impacto socioeconómico en el mundo. Por su alta incidencia, su curso clínico progresivo y sus requerimientos asistenciales constituyen un problema de salud pública de primer orden, es por ello que surge la necesidad de realizar una evaluación que determine el nivel de deterioro de las capacidades condicionales como fuerza y capacidad aeróbica. Objetivo: Identificar los métodos utilizados para la evaluación de la capacidad aeróbica y la fuerza muscular en pacientes con EPOC en un ambiente intrahospitalario. Método: Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en las plataformas Pubmed, Ebsco, Pedro y Scielo. Se seleccionaron ensayos clínicos controlados aleatorizados que relacionaran la medición de la fuerza muscular en pacientes con EPOC hospitalizados. Se identificación y seleccionaron 32 artículos no superiores a 7 años de publicación. Resultados: En la medición de la capacidad aeróbica se encontraron estrategias de evaluación como la marcha de los 6 minutos, el cicloergómetro y la banda sin fin (p=<0.001) y (p=<0.05). Para la medición de la fuerza y resistencia se hallaron pruebas de evaluación tales como la prueba incremental de los miembros superiores y la dinamometría (p=<0.033 y p=<0.006). Conclusión: La evaluación de la capacidad aeróbica en personas con diagnóstico de EPOC consiste principalmente en la aplicación de la prueba de caminata de 6 minuto (p=0.005), seguido del Cicloergómetro y banda sin fin (p=0.01, p=0.05). En cuanto a la evaluación de la fuerza, el método más utilizado es dinamometría para miembros superiores y prueba de RM para miembros inferiores (p=0.05).
Background : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the most prevalent respiratory and socioeconomic impact in the world. Because of its high incidence, its progressive clinical course and its health care requirements are a major public health problem, it is for this reason that the need arises to carry out an evaluation that determines the level of deterioration of the conditional capacities, such as strength and aerobic capacity. Objective : To identify the methods used for the evaluation of aerobic capacity and muscle strength in patients with COPD in an inpatient setting. Method :A systematic search was carried out on the platforms Pubmed, Ebsco, Pedro and Scielo. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials comparing muscle  strength measurement in hospitalized COPD patients were selected. We identified and selected 32 articles no longer than 7 years of publication. Results : In the measurement of aerobic capacity, evaluation strategies such as 6-minute gait, cycle ergometer and endless band (p=<0.001 ) and (p=<0.05) were found. For the measurement of strength and resistance, evaluation tests such as incremental upper limb test and dynamometry (p=<0.033 and p=<0.006) were found. Conclusion : The evaluation of aerobic capacity in people with COPD consists mainly of the 6-minute walk test (p=0.005), followed by the cycle and endless band (P=0.01, P=0.05), the most commonly used method is dynamometry for upper limbs and MRI test for lower limbs (P=0.05).

SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized controlled trials comparing muscle  strength measurement in hospitalized COPD patients were selected. We identified and selected 32 articles no longer than 7 years of publication. Results : In the measurement of aerobic capacity, evaluation strategies such as 6-minute gait, cycle ergometer and endless band (p=<0.001 ) and (p=<0.05) were found. For the measurement of strength and resistance, evaluation tests such as incremental upper limb test and dynamometry (p=<0.033 and p=<0.006) were found. Conclusion : The evaluation of aerobic capacity in people with COPD consists mainly of the 6-minute walk test (p=0.005), followed by the cycle and endless band (P=0.01, P=0.05), the most commonly used method is dynamometry for upper limbs and MRI test for lower limbs (P=0.05).
