La región Caribe colombiana y en especial Barranquilla, considerada su capital política, cultural y financiera, ha sido pionera en muchos aspectos de la vida nacional. Grandes desarrollos como el primer vuelo en avión (1912), la primera aerolínea del continente americano y segunda del mundo SCADTA (1919), el primer correo aéreo (1919), las primeras empresas públicas del país (1925) y la primera emisora comercial La voz de Barranquilla (1929), entre muchos otros, han tenido su asiento en esta ciudad [1].
