La historia de las acciones que ha llevado a cabo la humanidad con la intención de recuperar u optimizar las capacidades funcionales de sus congéneres y que en algún momento recibió el nombre de rehabilitación es remota. Sin embargo, entre fnales del siglo XIX y las primeras dos décadas del siglo XX, dos hechos históricos cambiaron de forma sustancial la historia de la rehabilitación. Estos eventos fueron: por un lado, la polio, una de las enfermedades infectocontagiosas más terribles de la historia. Por otro lado, la Gran Guerra, la más cruenta hasta ese momento. Sin embargo, entre fnales del siglo XIX y las primeras dos décadas del siglo XX, dos hechos históricos cambiaron de forma sustancial la historia de la rehabilitación. Estos eventos fueron: por un lado, la polio, una de las enfermedades infectocontagiosas más terribles de la historia. Por otro lado, la Gran Guerra, la más cruenta hasta ese momento. Dos historias que discurrían paralelas y sin aparentes elementos en común, pero que, en realidad, guardaban algunas equivalencias. A la luz del siglo XX, la poliomielitis y la Gran Guerra establecieron un diálogo que permitió forjar un nuevo paradigma en la atención en salud, construir elementos para resignifcar las discapacidades y labrar los caminos de nuevas profesiones tras la compleja tarea de rehabilitar.</p> <p>The history of the actions that humanity has carried out with the intention of recovering or optimizing the functional abilities of its congeners, that at some point was called rehabilitation, is remote. These events were on the one hand: polio, one of the most terrible infectious and contagious diseases in history and on the other hand: The Great War, the bloodiest one until that moment. Two parallel stories that ran without many elements in common, but in reality, they kept some equivalences.
