Este trabajo se plantea como una revisión del panorama actual de las discusiones en torno al surgimiento y difusión de formas inclusivas de género en español, con especial foco sobre los estudios y evidencia empírica que existe hasta el momento sobre su procesamiento psicolingüístico. Discutimos globalmente los datos existentes hasta el momento, con especial interés sobre los estudios desarrollados en América Latina. Los datos muestran un sesgo masculinizante del masculino genérico cuando se procesan piezas de discurso que presentan sintagmas nominales en plural, como “los científicos”. Existen, además, numerosos estudios sobre cómo los estereotipos de género inciden durante la comprensión de nombres de rol y generan interacciones significativas con la morfología de género. La presente revisión permite derivar algunas conclusiones preliminares: las distintas propuestas de lenguaje inclusivo de género conviven en el uso espontáneo de hispanohablantes; el lenguaje inclusivo de género es más utilizado por mujeres y jóvenes; las formas no binarias no siempre suponen un obstáculo para el procesamiento y la comprensión, aunque pueden generar dificultad para la concordancia a nivel local; estas formas consiguen generar una representación genérica y mitigan los sesgos de estereotipicidad de los nombres de rol.

This work is presented as a review of the current panorama of discussions around the emergence and diffusion of inclusive forms of gender in Spanish, with a special focus on the studies and empirical evidence that exists to date on its psycholinguistic processing. We discuss globally the data existing so far, with a special interest in the studies developed in Latin America. There is empirical evidence in different languages on how the computation of gender morphology during psycholinguistic processing affects the formation of sex-gender representations. The data show a masculinizing bias of the generic masculine when processing pieces of discourse that present plural noun phrases, such as “the scientists.” There are also numerous studies on how gender stereotypes affect the understanding of role names and generate significant interactions with gender morphology. The present review allows us to derive some preliminary conclusions: the different proposals for gender-inclusive language coexist in the spontaneous use of Spanish speakers; gender-inclusive language is more used by women and young people; non-binary forms do not always pose an obstacle to processing and understanding, although they can cause difficulty in agreement at the local level; these forms manage to generate a generic representation and mitigate the stereotypicality biases of role names.

This work is presented as a review of the current panorama of discussions around the emergence and diffusion of inclusive forms of gender in Spanish, with a special focus on the studies and empirical evidence that exists to date on its psycholinguistic processing. We discuss globally the data existing so far, with a special interest in the studies developed in Latin America. There is empirical evidence in different languages on how the computation of gender morphology during psycholinguistic processing affects the formation of sex-gender representations. The data show a masculinizing bias of the generic masculine when processing pieces of discourse that present plural noun phrases, such as “the scientists.” There are also numerous studies on how gender stereotypes affect the understanding of role names and generate significant interactions with gender morphology. The present review allows us to derive some preliminary conclusions: the different proposals for gender-inclusive language coexist in the spontaneous use of Spanish speakers; gender-inclusive language is more used by women and young people; non-binary forms do not always pose an obstacle to processing and understanding, although they can cause difficulty in agreement at the local level; these forms manage to generate a generic representation and mitigate the stereotypicality biases of role names.
