spelling Mechanical ventilation is a method to support patients with respiratory failure for different pathologic conditions. Mechanicalventilation induces several changes at cellular level that can cause: decrease in neural and diaphragmatic activity,decrease is strength of the diaphragm, increase in oxidative stress and rate of protein synthesis. The uses of muscularrelaxants induce muscular dysfunction. All of these cause alteration of the mechanics of breathing with failure to weanand prolonged ventilator support.The main objective of this article is to review the literature about cellular changes in the diaphragm associated tomechanical ventilation.
