Silicosis, a word derived from the Latin word silex (flint), is arguably the most ancient occupational disease within the group of the pneumoconioses; it may have existed as early as the paleolithic period. It was described by Hippocrates when he observed a certain respiratory difficulty in miners. Silica dust is the main component of sand, and thus exposure to it is common among gold miners, sandstone and granite cutters, workmen of foundries, miners, and potters. One of the most harmful exposures is that suffered by workers who use the sand jet in foundries to detach embedded metallic pieces or to clean smelted pieces, and percussion with drill or hammer in mines. Silicosis appears when dusts containing free silica (SiO2 ), such as quartz, sand, and granite (60% SiO2 ) are breathed in. Mier Osejo, MD., José E.
