Acute pulmonary embolism is a disease whose distribution within the general population is wide. Its impact on the morbidity and mortality of patients is high, and its clinical spectrum variable. Medical therapies based on agents such as anticoagulants and fibrinolytics have reduced its mortality during the past decades. However, since diagnosis of this disease is difficult, it is important to develop practical, fast and reliable diagnostic methods in order to devise therapeutic strategies capable of favorably affecting the adverse outcomes of this disease.
