spelling Many patients with COPD in acute or chronic stages suffer accumulation of secretions in the airways. Respiratory therapy (RT) is often used as an effective therapeutic method for the treatment of these patients. RT uses physical forces such as gravity and thoracic percussion for the management of these secretions. It uses manual interventions such as postural drainage; percussion, vibration, and shaking of the chest; assisted cough; and forced expiration techniques. This therapy demands work, time, and costs. There are few systematic reviews of RT, and these reviews are based on very few randomized clinical trials. These reviews do not validate the benefits of RT in patients with COPD. The beneficial effects of RT have been limited to sputum production and radio-aerosol clearance. There are no studies that show a beneficial action of RT on lung function.
