spelling his review describes the etiology and nature of asthma in the historical context, the pathology and pathophysiology in time, and how the asthma therapy concept has been developed. Since ancient times, asthma has been recognized by many cultures, including Chinese, Hebrew, Greek, and Roman. The Greek physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC) was one of the first to describe it, although the term was used to refer to a symptom and not to a disease. The major contribution to understanding asthma in the nineteenth century was made by Henry Hyde Salter (1823–1871). He proposed its subdivision into intrinsic and extrinsic asthma based on the mechanism and nature of various stimuli. William Osler (1849-1919) described the correlation between the various stimuli causing paroxysmal disorder of the airways in asthma.
