Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage is a clinicopathologic syndrome seen as a manifestation of multiple pathologic conditions. It must always be regarded as a medical emergency, since it can severely compromise the adequate functioning of the respiratory system. Early recognition and diagnosis are likewise important for initiatin aggressive treatment, in order to avoid deterioration of pulmonary function. Although there are multiple systems for classifying diffuse alveolar hemorrhage with regard to etiology and histopathology, it is considerably useful to divide these hemorrhages into two large groups, from the point of view of diagnosis and treatment:1. Associated with infl ammatory phenomena of the small capillary network of the lung (capillaritis).2. Not associated with capillaritis.This article is a review of the conditions associated with diffuse alveolar hemorrhage belonging to the capillaritis group.
