spelling Pulmonary rehabilitation is an intervention whose goals are to reduce symptoms, to improve exercise tolerance, and to increase participation in everyday activities in individuals with chronic respiratory diseases. Physical training, which is at the core of pulmonary rehabilitation programs, is aimed at exercising the muscles involved in perambulation as well as those of the upper limbs, which are used in most everyday activities. It is recommended that training of the muscles of the upper limbs be included in all pulmonary rehabilitation programs. This paper reviews the available evidence on the causes of limited exercise tolerance of the upper limbs in persons with chronic respiratory diseases and on the usefulness of training these muscles. The paper also discusses the effects of this training and considers its application in everyday clinical practice.
