spelling The use of carbon monoxide to verify the theory of simple diffusion produced one of the most useful and simple tests of lung function that is used today in most pulmonary function laboratories in the world. The calculation of the diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide is the product of two simultaneous measurements, the constant rate of gas uptake and alveolar volume, and this is why it is a determinant of the measure along with other physiological variables such as the value hemoglobin, height above sea level, capillary blood volume and quality of technical variables such as inspiratory maneuver, inspiratory apnea time and the interval between tests. There are a large number of predicted normal values and reference equations and there is no consensus for its use. As for the interpretation, the notion that diffusion must be corrected for a given alveolar volume is incorrect and this aspect will be explained in detail in the development of this review.
